Training for Supermarket Shoppers

SUPERMARKET shoppers were urged to check out potential new routes into education – as Darlington College took its wealth of courses into the local community.

The college set up a display in the foyer of the Morrisons store, at Morton Park, in a bid to encourage local people and businesses to sign up for tuition in a range of career-enhancing subjects.

The initiative revealed the array of opportunities that the college can provide in further and higher education, as well as chances for employers to boost the skills of their workforces
.
It also highlighted the partnership between the college and the University of Teesside, which has a centre at the Darlington campus and is working on plans to have a stand-alone building there, meaning there would be 1,000 higher education learners in the town by the end of 2010.

The link-up means prospective students can start vocational courses, before progressing on to degrees or other qualifications offered by the university.

The college’s innovative Business First team is also available to provide training for employees of local companies, enhancing their skill levels and, in turn, helping to boost morale and productivity.

Danielle Read, Business First Employer Engagement Advisor, said: “Bringing these displays out into the community gives us an excellent chance to speak to large numbers of people about how our courses could benefit them.

“Apprenticeships, for example, are becoming increasingly popular and we can provide details about how someone could get started.

“As well as offering information to passers-by, we are also able to give employers advice on training packages tailored to suit their needs.”

Exhibitions have also been staged at Orange, Lingfield Point, Woodlands Health Care, Darlington Council and the Student Loans Company.
