Case Study: Health and Social Care
Thursday 19 February 2009
The Salvation Army helped employees at their Darlington Centre to improve their confidence and update their skills, by offering them the chance to attend college one day per week and achieve a recognised qualification in Health and Social Care.

After initially enquiring at Darlington College about apprenticeships, Tony Thornton, Centre Manager at the Salvation Army Social Service centre, wanted to introduce a learning programme that would benefit employee’s continued professional development and their future career.
‘As Darlington College is on our doorstep they were the ideal training provider for us and after they provided me with more information about apprenticeships, I was keen to get my employees started! The process was very straightforward and it was made very clear to me what my responsibilities were as an employer’.
Tony found that the apprenticeship scheme was not disruptive to his employees existing work commitments, but has been a very positive way forward. ‘From spending one-day per week at college, I have seen great improvements in my employee’s people skills and their awareness of other job roles within health care’.
